If we want to diversify Nigeria’s economy and reduce our dependence on crude oil, agro-processing must be at the heart of our industrial programme. Let us start with something simple but globally impactful — a breakfast cereal plan.
On August 8, 1898, Will Kellogg invented Corn Flakes, which went on to become the world’s most popular breakfast cereal. Today, Kellogg employs about 33,000 people and has an annual turnover of $13 billion. Its success lies in converting cereals into packaged breakfast products, later expanding into snacks like Pringles, Cheez-It Crackers, and Pop Tarts. Companies like Weetabix and Quaker Oats operate on the same principle.
Nigeria is uniquely positioned to replicate this model. We are the world’s largest producer of cassava (50 million tonnes annually, 20% of global output), the largest producer of yam (40 million tonnes, 70% of global output), the second largest producer of millet (5 million tonnes), and the second largest producer of grain sorghum (7 million tonnes). We also lead in cocoyam production with 3.2 million tonnes.
There is nothing stopping us from creating cereals from cassava, yam, cocoyam, millet, or sorghum. Corn Flakes are made from maize, Weetabix from wheat, Quaker Oats from oats. Why is there no tropical alternative? Nigeria, the giant of Africa, must fill this void. We should already have a globally acclaimed cereal brand competing with Kellogg, Quaker, and Weetabix.
What we need is a world-class domestic food company to step into the gap. I see three options:
- Dangote Industries – leverage its scale and capital to build a cereal empire.
- Privatised NNPC – diversify into agro-processing as part of its transformation.
- Man of God Plc – a merger of Nigeria’s pastorpreneurs into a faith-driven food conglomerate.
Nigeria must stop exporting raw crops and start exporting finished, packaged, shelf-ready products. A Nigerian cereal brand could become a global household name, creating jobs, boosting exports, and reshaping our economic destiny.
