Epochal Coronation of the Oluoke of Okeigbo: HRM Oba Akintoye Adeoye Ascends the Throne
The ancient town of Okeigbo witnessed a historic milestone today as His Royal Majesty, Oba Akintoye Felix Adeoye (Adegbite II), was formally crowned as the Oluoke of Okeigbo Kingdom. The coronation marks the completion of a seven-day seclusion exercise, known in Yoruba tradition as Ìpèbí, a rite of purification and ancestral connection that prepares a monarch spiritually and culturally for the responsibilities of kingship.
Clad in the sacred Ade Nla—the beaded crown with its symbolic fringe—Oba Adeoye emerged before his people, embodying the authority, divinity, and continuity of Yoruba royalty. The crown, heavily adorned with beads, signifies Okeigbo’s deep ties to Ile-Ife, the cradle of Yoruba civilization.
In the days leading up to the coronation, Oba Adeoye paid homage to His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, who bestowed ancestral blessings upon him. This gesture reaffirmed Okeigbo’s spiritual and cultural bond with Ife, the source of Yoruba heritage.
The coronation ceremony was steeped in tradition. Custodians of the crown, the Idita community led by Obadita Temitayo Adesogbon, alongside the venerable Obalale of Okeigbo, Pa Johnson Elusoji, supervised the rites. The Pakoyi of Okeigbo, Chief Omotayo Olatinsun, ensured market protocols were observed, while Chief Mudashiru Akintomide, the Akogun of Okeigboland, prepared to hand over the sacred sword—a symbol of authority and protection to the new monarch.
Throughout the seclusion, prayers (iwure) and ritual performances were conducted by Ifa priests under the guidance of Chief Ifasina Ogunjimi, the newly appointed Adifa Oba. These rites, often misunderstood or misrepresented in popular culture, were revealed to be solemn acts of spiritual fortification rather than demonic practices, as some have wrongly assumed.
Beyond the rituals and symbolism, the coronation of Oba Akintoye Adeoye represents a unifying force for the people of Okeigbo.
