Nigeria, US Envoys Hold Closed-Door Meeting on Removal from ‘Countries of Particular Concern’ List

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has held a closed-door meeting with the United States Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Mike Waltz, as part of ongoing diplomatic engagements concerning Nigeria’s designation on the United States’ “Countries of Particular Concern” list.

The high-level meeting was held at the United States Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Although details of the discussions were not made public, the meeting is understood to have focused on issues surrounding Nigeria’s designation and efforts toward its removal from the CPC list.

Speaking after the meeting, Ambassador Ibrahim described the engagement as positive, expressing appreciation to Ambassador Waltz for the warm reception and constructive atmosphere during the discussions.

He thanked the US envoy for what he described as an excellent reception, signalling the cordial nature of the diplomatic engagement between both countries.

In a separate statement following the meeting, Ambassador Waltz described his conversation with Ambassador Ibrahim as a “good” one, saying both sides were finding common ground on how to “Make the UN Great Again.”

“Good conversation with my counterpart from Nigeria, Ambassador Ibrahim Jimoh. Glad we’re finding common ground on how we will Make the UN Great Again!” Waltz said.

The US envoy added that he looked forward to building on the partnership with Nigeria as the two countries head into the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, using the hashtag #MUNGA.

The meeting comes amid broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria-US relations and deepen diplomatic consultations on issues of mutual interest at the United Nations.

The CPC designation carries significant diplomatic attention, making high-level engagements between Nigerian and US officials particularly important as both countries continue discussions on religious freedom, security and other areas of bilateral concern.
