This Nigerian Local Government Bill 2026 must be passed into law before next year’s elections. If we are serious about building a functional federation, then our 774 local government areas must be empowered to become engines of development rather than mere administrative units.
Every local government must be added to the national rail network, with each secretariat hosting a functioning railway station. This would revolutionise transport, connect communities, and make commerce seamless. Alongside this, every local government must establish at least one technical vocational college to equip youths with practical skills.
Electricity distribution stations must be built in every local government area, ensuring reliable power supply. Each must also host an annual sports festival to foster unity, talent development, and community pride. Importantly, local governments must cover their annual expenditure through internally generated revenue, ending dependence on federal allocations.
Industrialisation must be decentralised. Every local government should have at least one industrial estate, creating jobs and boosting local economies. Healthcare must be prioritised, with each area hosting at least one general hospital. Education too must be strengthened, with a minimum of five secondary schools per local government.
Sanitation cannot be ignored. Each local government must establish a refuse disposal agency to keep communities clean and healthy. Finally, inclusivity must be guaranteed. At least 40% of all political appointments in every local government should go to women, ensuring balanced representation and harnessing the full potential of our population.
This bill would transform Nigeria from the grassroots up, creating a federation where local governments are not just administrative appendages but vibrant centres of development. If passed, the Nigerian Local Government Bill 2026 could be the foundation for a truly self-reliant nation.
