Nigerian Elected Into International Law Commission, Jimoh Ibrahim Congratulates Tinubu
Nigeria has recorded another diplomatic milestone as Oluwafemi Elias has been elected into the prestigious International Law Commission (ILC) during its 77th session in Geneva. The ILC, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1947, is tasked with the progressive development and codification of international law, including frameworks on state responsibility, diplomatic immunity, and international legal standards.
Reacting to the development, Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador (Sen.) Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, PhD (Cantab), congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on what he described as “one of his early wins” since assuming office.
Ambassador Ibrahim noted that Nigeria is “fully back” in the affairs of the UN, adding that President Tinubu should expect more of such diplomatic gains within his first 90 days in office. He emphasized that the election of Elias into the ILC strengthens Nigeria’s voice in shaping international legal norms and demonstrates renewed confidence in Nigeria’s global leadership.
The Nigerian Mission to the United Nations has already communicated the development to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, underscoring the significance of the achievement for Nigeria’s foreign policy and international standing.
This election is widely seen as a boost to Nigeria’s diplomatic profile, reaffirming the country’s commitment to international law and multilateral cooperation.
