Jimoh Ibrahim Takes Over UN Peacekeeping Committee Chairmanship

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations Peacekeeping Committee, known as Committee 34 (C34), further expanding Nigeria’s leadership role in the global body.
Ibrahim, who recently marked 100 days in office following his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, takes over the leadership of the committee at a critical period when the United Nations continues to confront complex security challenges, including terrorism, armed conflicts and threats to civilian populations.
In his remarks after assuming the chairmanship, Ambassador Ibrahim said the United Nations would continue to work towards strengthening peacekeeping operations and ensuring stability in counterterrorism efforts, with particular attention to the protection and interests of civilians.
He expressed appreciation to the outgoing chairman from Canada for his outstanding leadership and the work accomplished during his tenure, while pledging to build on the achievements of the previous administration.
The latest responsibility means Ambassador Ibrahim now chairs two major United Nations committees: the United Nations Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions and the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C34).
His emergence as chairman of the two committees places Nigeria at the centre of important deliberations on the financing, administration and operational effectiveness of the United Nations, as well as international peacekeeping and security.
Ambassador Ibrahim, a Nigerian diplomat and scholar, holds academic qualifications from institutions including Harvard University, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge and Obafemi Awolowo University.
His assumption of the C34 chairmanship comes as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its contribution to international peace, security and multilateral diplomacy, while advancing President Tinubu’s foreign policy objectives at the United Nations.
